Meet Darius McKiver
How did you first get into makeup?
I got into makeup a few years ago for Halloween. After getting all done up that year, I decided that I would do drag next. So I spent that year watching tutorials and learning how to do my makeup. And the next thing you know, learning how to do drag makeup turned into learning how to do high glam and everyday makeup. And I’ve stuck with it ever since.
My love for makeup started as a hobby and side interest. But I’ve always been an artistic kid. So the more I dived into makeup the more passionate I became about it. Now it’s part of who I am. I’ve become a representation of the people I looked up to as well as an influence to people who look up to me.
Who is your number one makeup inspiration and why? Top Influencers?
Hands down Jackie Aina. She’s been so inspirational to me in my journey in the beauty industry, and I wouldn’t have decided to push myself as influencer if it wasn’t for her. To get her stamp of approval this past year has really made me feel like I’m on the right path. I am also a big supporter of PoeticDrugs, HeFlawless, and Thomas Halbert (all of which I looked up to and can now consider my contemporaries). I also enjoy Alissa & Arnell, MakeupbyShayla, Too Much Mouth, Andrea Renee, Rocio, and pretty much anyone who considers themselves a champion for people of color, especially black people, and men in the beauty community.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now makeup-wise?
I see myself continuing to grow as an artist, influencer, and individual. There’s so much I’ve learned within the past year that I wasn’t aware of beforehand, so there’s definitely room for me to grow. As far as goals, I can see myself becoming a part of campaigns for brands, having a collaboration (or 2) with some of my favorite brands, or possibly even becoming a face of a line or brand. Who knows?
What is one product you can't live without and why?
I have to have a Fenty Gloss. Doesn’t matter which one, I just have to have one. The ABH Sundipped Glowkit is one of the best things to happen for deep complexions in a while. And my recent obsession, the Milk Makeup Hydro Grip primer. I don’t care what foundation I have, as long as I have that primer. And it works really well with the skin on it’s own.
What has been your biggest milestone/achievement when it comes to makeup?
There’s been a few. Having Jackie’s stamp of approval was the big turning point for me. Having someone I’ve looked up to and considered a mentor tell me that what I’m doing is right and to keep at it really lit a fire in my heart. My collaboration with Drench Cosmetics is an easy second. I’d never thought I’d have a collaboration so early on. And to be able to be so hands on with the conception and production of the launch really made me feel special, ya know? I can’t wait to see what we do next!
Is there any other information you'd like to share with the world?
I have a few projects outside of makeup that I’m really excited to share, including music and a podcast. I can’t wait for the world to hear what I’ve been working on. So stay tuned!
